about

There’s another pale horse gone astray in ‘Luckless’. In this case a metaphor not for Death but for Madness. Precious little death and madness in contemporary pop lyrics I feel. The Hepburns: taking bookings now for children’s parties. Anyway, the reference to Hartley’s jam would most probably be lost on a younger audience.

lyrics

Luckless

Luckless white as a chalk horse
Gone astray on the motorway
Beyond the road the stars reflected in the reservoir
That’s what I see
But what kind of monsters do you behold?
I wrap my arms around your bony frame
Can’t keep your mind from wandering
Where have you gone my luckless one?
I’ve got more jam then Hartley’s
You’ve got no jam at all
If like they say your eyes lead to your soul
Then your soul is as black as coal
What kind of monsters do you behold
When you close your eyes and do those monsters
Look like me? Can’t set you free.
Where have you gone my luckless one?
If you’re in hell
Then I’m there as well
