I slipped into warm darkness, like into a coal seam
Illicit drinking session in the Princess Head
On to the Curry Gardens then back home to bed

This is a childhood story about a house fire
Put out posthumously by the ex-head of the choir

Grandad was a miner, a literary man
He also loved his music, the miner’s choir he ran
While he embraced the arts, a drink he would refuse
He even went on TV to decry the demon booze
