about

The setting for ‘Capricorn Gowns’ is Aberystwyth where there‘s a ladies clothes shop of that name. The “Donald and Julie” of Verse 2 are, of course, Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie, stars of Nic Roeg’s ‘Don’t Look Now’ (1973). Not so obvious perhaps the lyrical lift from Status Quo’s ‘Caroline’ (also 1973).

lyrics

Capricorn Gowns

The Victorian façade enjoyed views of the promenade
I detected the vague whiff of gin
Drumming on his knee and drinking scalding cups of tea
The tattooed hardman imprisoned within
A pack of dogs who’d had their day slunk forlornly away
In search of fast food that had slowed sufficiently
“So if you want to turn me onto your love…”
Reflected in the gutter flags of lesser nations flutter
Championing mediocrity. For underlying menace
This place is up there with Venice
A latter-day Donald and Julie, we.
A cable car is nesting in an eyrie high above
One row of deckchairs spells out hate, the other spells out love
“So if you want to turn me onto anything you really want to
The turn me onto your love, sweet love.”
I do recall you said one day that we’d be wed
Here in the city of the downtrodden.
We’ll muzzle up the hounds, get your dress from Capricorn Gowns
Unless you prefer something more modern
I’ve long suspected that you’re not a fan of The Hepburns
That’s okay for such occasions there are more suitable turns
“So if you want to turn me onto your love.”
