about

‘Breakfast of Champions’ is about a charity bike ride from London to Oxford, upon which the author was accompanied by his associate, Mr C K Garrington. Whilst others were applying liniments, Garrington imbibed several pints of cider and a handful of paracetamol. Caradog Lloyd-Evans is of course the undertaker from ‘Grand Slam’. The “ashen horse” quotation is taken from the Bible: "And I looked, and behold, an ashen horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him." (Revelations 6:8). With Sir Gordon Richards on Tudor Minstrel a creditable third.

lyrics

Breakfast of Champions

Like Caradog Lloyd-Evans you performed your ablutions
Drinking a pint of cider, breakfast of champions
Wolfing paracetamol, anticipating pain
We took the bus to London through intermittent rain
We’d signed up for the bike ride when we were drunk
To the smell of bridges burning and the sound of galleys sunk
By the time we got to Iver supplies were running low
Crouching in the toilets with your last can of ‘Bow

Would we have bothered if we’d known what lay ahead?
Stretched out on the pavement I thought that you were dead
The legendary shanter upon an ashen horse
Calling out for Fanta. Our tale has run its course
