Paperboy 03:00
Paperboy Most of the town are still in their beds The divorcees and the newlyweds But someone is squinting into the sun Staring heavenwards Dirty stop-outs rehearsing their alibis The righteous rubbing the sleep from their eyes And if you listen you can hear the sound Of the early bird Another day dawns what will it reveal? Ladies of iron and men of steel One day you will know just how it feels To be a paper boy
2.
Breakfast of Champions Like Caradog Lloyd-Evans you performed your ablutions Drinking a pint of cider, breakfast of champions Wolfing paracetamol, anticipating pain We took the bus to London through intermittent rain We’d signed up for the bike ride when we were drunk To the smell of bridges burning and the sound of galleys sunk By the time we got to Iver supplies were running low Crouching in the toilets with your last can of ‘Bow Would we have bothered if we’d known what lay ahead? Stretched out on the pavement I thought that you were dead The legendary shanter upon an ashen horse Calling out for Fanta. Our tale has run its course
3.
I Remember Your Scars An impression of park railings a souvenir of pain Some documentary footage of the street after the rain Reflecting the brake lights of disappearing cars Connecting the fake acts in the nightclubs and the bars Singing ‘Ever Fallen in Love’, two builders with guitars A hazy recollection but I remember your scars Here’s the loose change from a spent hurricane The tail-end of a wet night, the view from down the drain For the sake of a rhyme I would describe the stars But besides the drink and laughter the details are sparse Singing ‘Ever Fallen in Love’, two builders with guitars A hazy recollection but I remember your scars The streets were still vibrating after heavy downpours I can’t even recall your name but I remember your scars

Backhand 02:39
Backhand Please forgive me but I am in awe It’s not like anything I ever saw before… Weightlessly around the courts you ghost Making making history look like making toast I’m not religious but it’s heaven-sent May I pay your backhand this compliment You were born to astound and confound Floating a full metre above the ground Your wrist gyrating Like a fakir levitating I’ll spare the pair of us the conceit That I don’t wish your shoes contained my feet I’m not religious but it’s heaven-sent May I pay your backhand this compliment But all good things have to come to an end And pretty soon you will have to descend Swap escutcheon and esteem For the commentary team The present by the past outshone And the future oddly misshapen Thus talent meagre and extravagant May I pay your backhand this compliment
5.
Ten Years 02:32
Ten Years When I first saw you it was on the movie set Though that was closer than I thought I’d ever get Your komodo dragon was part-bodyguard, part-pet Ten years after writing this we finally met During the shooting I could hardly get my breath A remake of ‘The Seventh Seal’ with you playing Death I just stood there fumbling with my puncture repair kit Ten years after writing this we finally met Amongst your entourage a voice coach and a vet Not the ideal moment then for my lines to forget Effortlessly you impaled me on an epithet Ten years after writing this we finally met Mathematically speaking you’re only half my age But do you ever count the numbers when you turn the page? And anyway who was it who was blushing like a kid? Ten years after writing this we finally met

Bad Karma Caravan 322b was my number and Rosedale was my name I was minding my own business the day the stranger came Looking for the solace I was happy to provide, but From the fear and doubt inside him he could never hide Though we spent the week together he would often disappear Returning late exhausted but knowing I'd be here Looking for the solace I was happy to provide, but From the fear and doubt inside him he could never hide The last time that I saw him he told me had a date A date with destiny, a rendezvous with fate The first time that I walked this earth I did so as man My Karma must have been bad to come back a caravan
7.
Celandine 03:34
Celandine I’ve been searching for an old friend Although I promised I’d never do this shit again What a waste of time. What a charade. Breaking solemn promises is not so very hard My pretty Celandine. I’ve been searching for someone I used to know But the crowd’s dispersing after the Lord Mayor’s show I miss the excitement, the thrill I used to get Knowing you would be there. Tell me it isn’t over yet My pretty Celandine. Out on the dance floor, caught by the strobe Captured forever in your flaxen robe My pretty Celandine
8.
If I Was a Hairdresser If I was a hairdresser I’d have a place of my own And when my shift was over I’d slowly walk off home You could be a taxi driver speeding through the city streets Staring through your windscreen wipers hoping we could meet If I was a hairdresser I’d take the kids to school Stretch out on the fire escape when the moon was full You could be a taxi driver speeding through the city streets Staring through your windscreen wipers hoping we could meet Watch the pavement drown All cross this town If I was a hairdresser I’d wait until the engine stopped Listen for the sound of footsteps whilst I tidied up the shop You could be a taxi driver, you could take a fair Into the countryside, you could take me there Watch the pavement drown All cross this town

Luckless 02:56
Luckless Luckless white as a chalk horse Gone astray on the motorway Beyond the road the stars reflected in the reservoir That’s what I see But what kind of monsters do you behold? I wrap my arms around your bony frame Can’t keep your mind from wandering Where have you gone my luckless one? I’ve got more jam then Hartley’s You’ve got no jam at all If like they say your eyes lead to your soul Then your soul is as black as coal What kind of monsters do you behold When you close your eyes and do those monsters Look like me? Can’t set you free. Where have you gone my luckless one? If you’re in hell Then I’m there as well

Capricorn Gowns The Victorian façade enjoyed views of the promenade I detected the vague whiff of gin Drumming on his knee and drinking scalding cups of tea The tattooed hardman imprisoned within A pack of dogs who’d had their day slunk forlornly away In search of fast food that had slowed sufficiently “So if you want to turn me onto your love…” Reflected in the gutter flags of lesser nations flutter Championing mediocrity. For underlying menace This place is up there with Venice A latter-day Donald and Julie, we. A cable car is nesting in an eyrie high above One row of deckchairs spells out hate, the other spells out love “So if you want to turn me onto anything you really want to The turn me onto your love, sweet love.” I do recall you said one day that we’d be wed Here in the city of the downtrodden. We’ll muzzle up the hounds, get your dress from Capricorn Gowns Unless you prefer something more modern I’ve long suspected that you’re not a fan of The Hepburns That’s okay for such occasions there are more suitable turns “So if you want to turn me onto your love.”

Shape Thing 01:57
Shape Thing This is your unbecoming Just like a training shoe Takes on the shape of a foot That’s what fear has done to you (Chorus) And of your suffering I shudder to think It’s not just the shape thing You’re impregnated with its stink Fear has brought you to your knees Like a pilgrim devout It’s hulled you like a strawberry And hollowed you right out (Chorus) After your unbecoming I wonder who’ll take your place Will I turn to you one morning And see your tormentor’s face Ladies and gentlemen I give you a toast To the unwelcome guest And the reluctant host
