Who Really Wants To Be A Star? Knowing the fame game Wouldn’t be much fun Our drummer killed off his former self And summoned up a new one They say, ‘what’s in a name?’ But he had a vision When he adopted a pseudonym When he became Les Mun Chorus: There were those who thought he had gone too far But who really wants to be a star? So the years went by The money rolled in We were rolling in clover We were swimming in gin Our faces on the cover Of Rolling Stone magazine With the exception of one of us He was nowhere to be seen Chorus: See the Rockstar in the Jaguar? That’s a proxy Driving the posh car, who really wants to be a star? When playing the fame game Choose an avatar At least that way you’ll remember Who you really are

The Ship That Didn’t Sail You stood with Mao Zedong in China Against Franco with Hemingway in Spain You recorded the plight of the Belgian miners And in Amsterdam, you filmed the rain Sailing out of Sydney Harbour Manned by an all-Indian crew A supply ship headed for Jakarta Imperial business there to do Chorus: The ship that didn’t sail The ship that didn’t sail You were on hand to film the Black Armada With ‘Big Jim’ Healy and the unions, allied You and the wharfies boarded a tugboat And that ship, Jakarta bound, pulled alongside Calling to your Indian brothers through a bullhorn You made sure the cause of justice would prevail The ship bound for Jakarta never left Sydney Harbour The ship that didn’t sail (Chorus) You stood with Mao Zedong in China Against Franco with Hemingway in Spain You recorded the plight of the Belgian miners And in Amsterdam, you filmed the rain

about

The story starts on a cold October night in Bristol in October 2017 when The Hepburns supported Vic Godard and Subway Sect at The Thunderbolt. On our way to the venue, we walked past a group of people, including an unassuming chap with a familiar face. We issued the customary Llanelli greeting – ‘Alright?’ – which usually gets baffled looks from complete strangers. Not so on this occasion. The normal looking bloke returned the greeting with a smile. Was he Welsh, we wondered? No, he wasn’t. It turns out he was Vic Godard.

The band were incredible, and Vic himself was spellbinding in a string vest, bearing a mug of tea. He said he enjoyed The Hepburns set and that we should cover a Subway Sect song. The song he suggested was I’ll Find Out Over Time.

The single also sports two original numbers. Who Really Wants To Be A Star? is about how our drummer Les Mun got his name and nods towards Ian Dury and The Blockheads. To finish off a triptych of tributes, we have The Ship That Didn’t Sail, commemorating the work of another of the band’s heroes, Dutch filmmaker Joris Ivens. This is a very different version of a song which appears on our next album, On the Parcels (released early-2021 on Radio Khartoum), featuring the nautical accordion of Matt’s cousin, Marcus Tilt.
